It sounds like the first night of summer outside. Children laughing, playing, screaming, a few parents calling their kids in to go to bed. Yet, it isn’t the first night of summer here, rather, its a free protein snack night in Nkongsamba.
For whatever reason, Nkongsamba is swarming with grasshoppers. If I stand on our porch and look down the street, you can see hundreds of them mobbing the street light, with equal numbers of children below trying to catch and collect the bugs. Apparently, their influx marks the end of rainy season and the beginning of dry season; yet I swear this did not happen last year!
The kids are beyond excited. Our neighborhood that is usually silent by dark at 730pm is now alive with activity. The older kids are coaching the youngers on the best tactics to collect the bugs, everyone has a water bottle or bucket to consolidate their catch, and the kids are laughing. Tonton (uncle) Shaun joined them for about 15 minutes and managed to collect enough to fill a 1.5 liter water bottle full. There are more than enough grasshoppers to go around!
While I am not so sure I will eat much of the fried grasshopper snack he is currently preparing, I love eavesdropping on the energy and enthusiasm coming from our neighborhood kiddos.
